The Women’s Banner Group
The Women’s Banner Group
The Women’s Banner Group formed in November 2017 focuses on community engagement and celebrating women from varied backgrounds, welcoming input from the women of trade unions, politics and communities.
The group designed a community patchwork banner, drawing strength from the women who ran free cafés throughout the miners strikes and their unwillingness to let communities fall apart. This banner, which has been designed and produced by women from County Durham Coalfield areas, marched in its first Durham Miners Gala in 2018. It also had the honour of being blessed at Durham Cathedral following the procession; this was the culmination of hard work, community spirit and the passion and enthusiasm of women from across Durham.
The Women’s Banner Group held a banner unveiling event entitled ‘Redhills Revolution: A Celebration of Women’ as part of the Education4Action week long series of fringe events ahead of the 2018 Durham Miners’ Gala.
