‘Anne & Betty: United By The Struggle’, the memoir of Anne Scargill and Betty Cook

Anne Scargill and Betty Cook met at the beginning of the 1984/5 miners’ strike and have devoted their lives to the fight for our mining communities. They both became well known figures in the Women Against Pit Closures movement. They fundraised and fed communities, spoke at meetings and attended demonstrations. Anne was arrested on a picket line during the strike. Betty had her knee broken in three places by a policeman’s truncheon on a picket line.

Their unrelenting commitment to the struggle made them a dynamic duo. They were often together on rallies, demonstrations, picket lines and many other labour movement events. Their support for the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign meant they would use their many contacts and connections to encourage support for an Orgreave inquiry.
