INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ MEMORIAL DAY, Tuesday 28th April 2020
Theme for 2020: Coronavirus
This day demonstrates the need for solidarity all too well, with the slogan “Remember the dead, and fight for the living” proving increasingly relevant during this pandemic. The Trade Union and Labour movement will be commemorating this day throughout Britain and the world.
Sheffield Trade Union Council are organising a banner in the centre of Sheffield and wreath laying at the Workers Memorial tree outside the Town Hall. OTJC will have a wreath along with many Trade Unions and other organisations. A representative from Sheffield TUC will be laying the wreaths on our behalf and recording this as an on line event for us to safely take part. We will also be playing our OTJC speech on social media.
We will remember those who have lost their lives at work, or from work-related injury and diseases. Workers around the world are being asked not to work if they are doing non-essential work, alongside key workers taking action to get proper PPE and testing. Workers around the world are already getting their non-essential workplaces shut down – or winning the PPE they need – through their own and Trade Union actions.
PLEASE NOTE: We will post more information when it becomes available about timings and activities including a minutes silence and the lighting of candles.
