FRENCH GOVERNMENT LEGISLATE TO GIVE RESTORATIVE JUSTICE TO FRENCH MINERS
As well as the recent excellent news from Scotland, where the Justice Minister is working on pardons for the convicted Scottish miners, the OTJC is also boosted by events in France. The French government is to bring in legislation giving restorative justice to French miners who were victimised in their strikes of 1948 and 1952. Just as Thatcher called miners “the enemy within”, a leading French minister 70 years ago called the strikes “insurrectional”, and used phrases like “civil war”. Any of the strikers still alive who lost their jobs, will be compensated 30,000 euros. Their surviving children are to receive 5000 euros each. The strikes will also be put on the curriculum in French schools, so that school students can learn about how the miners felt the full force of the French state, backed by the media at the time.
