Looking forward to the programme, but coal mining in Yorkshire is not completely dead yet! Last June, New Crofton Co-operative Colliery (near Wakefield) gained planning permission to mine 5 million tonnes of coal from a new drift mine. This will mean jobs for 50 people for 20 years, in a workers co-operative. It has the overwhelming support of the local communities, and the founder members are currently engaged in raising the necessary capital.
Many people have said they want to support this new way of mining coal, so a community share offer has been opened by Coalfield Community Investment Society (www.ccis.uk.com) which will loan the money invested to the mine and pay interest to the shareholders.
