The OTJC are deeply saddened to learn that Rodney Bickerstaffe has died.
Rodney led the public sector union NUPE which later merged with NALGO to become UNISON. He was a great friend of the Miners and the National Union of Mineworkers, a champion of the Durham Miners Gala, where he spoke several times and a supporter of the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. Rodney played a massive role in the Trade Union movement campaigning against low pay and for increased pensions amongst many other important issues. His work changed many people’s lives for the better. His socialist principles, humour, passion, enthusiasm and zest for life will be deeply missed. The Labour and Trade Union movement have lost a tireless champion as well as a true friend.
