International Workers’ Memorial Day, 28th April 2020
Remember the Dead – Fight for the Living”
TUC’s theme for 2020: Coronavirus
The coronavirus pandemic affects every worker regardless of sector or locality. Tens of thousands of workers worldwide have died. More have fallen ill or continue to go to work risking their lives. Many workers are still attending work ill-equipped and without necessary safety measures in place.
We could not have a starker reminder of the important role of Trade Unions and Trade Union Health and Safety representatives in saving and protecting workers’ lives, than the current crisis we are living through.
While we may not be able to attend the memorial events which usually take place on IWMD, there are many ways we can take part in our collective day of remembrance and solidarity.
We remember those we have lost. We organise in their memory.
The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign have arranged a speech and for a wreath to be laid on our behalf at the Workers Memorial Tree in Sheffield. In Sheffield IWMD is normally a public gathering outside the Town Hall. This year it will be different, but even more important in recognition of the huge danger posed by Coronavirus to workers and the need for strong trade unions to ensure they are protected.
Sheffield Trade Union Council have organised an open invitation to the public to join their Zoom IWMD ceremony on Tuesday 28th April at 12:30 till 13:15. Please join this important Zoom video call. More information here:
If you are not in a union, join one today. Workers who are in a trade union are much better protected.
